The perfume seems to smell different to oil

Dear Chantal

Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts on our Fragrance Oils!

When fragrance oils are blended with an ethanol base to create a perfume, the scent can smell slightly different due to a few factors related to how the Ethanol Base interacts with the fragrance:

Volatility of Ingredients: Ethanol Base is a volatile substance, meaning it evaporates quickly when applied to the skin. This helps the fragrance release its scent over time in layers (top, middle, and base notes). Because of this, some lighter and more delicate notes may become more noticeable in a perfume than in the raw oil form.

Dilution and Projection: When a fragrance oil is diluted in the Ethanol Base , it has more 'room' to expand and evaporate, which can make some notes more pronounced or change the scent's intensity. In an undiluted oil, the scent is more concentrated, while the ethanol allows the scent to project and linger in a different way.

Alcohol's Effect on Perception: The Ethanol Base alters how our nose perceives certain notes because it releases scents differently than an oil base. For instance, the initial spray of an alcohol-based perfume may smell stronger and more diffused, allowing lighter notes to stand out first, while an oil has a slower release, leading to a richer, more intimate scent experience from the start.

Evaporation Rates: Each fragrance component has a unique evaporation rate, and ethanol affects these rates differently than an oil. In perfume, the top notes evaporate first, giving a different opening impression. With fragrance oils alone, the scent tends to be more consistent and smooth over time.

This is why a fragrance oil and an ethanol-based perfume might smell similar but also exhibit some differences when applied. The Ethanol Base essentially transforms the oil’s concentrated form, allowing it to bloom and evolve on the skin in ways specific to perfumes.

Issey Miyake

Absolutely beautiful smell. Aquatic Floral and combines notes of lotus, freesia and cyclamen and juicy melon, middle note of peony, lily and carnation, base notes of cedar, sandal, musk and amber. Customers love this one, it is a clean fresh smell, not overly sweet.
